aretypicallyadventurersorheroesouttosaveprincessesorstopevilmonstersandvillains.CallofCthulhuissetintheearly20thcenturyandfocusesonhorrorandmysterywherethePCsareinvestigatorsthataretryingtouncoversupernaturalsecretsorstopevilpeopleorcreaturesfromendingtheworld.D20Modernissetincontemporarytimesandhasseveraldifferentsettingsthatcanbeplayed.PCsoftentaketheroleofspecialagentsorinvestigatorsouttostopterroristsorsolvecrimes.Finally,thereistheoptiontocreateyourownsettingandrules.ThisisnotrecommendedforpeoplewhoareinexperiencedwithTTRPGs,butallowsformoreflexibilityinbalancingbothcomplexityandthesetting.IhaveutilizedbothD&D5eandmyownhome-maderuleset(heavilybasedonD20Modern)andfoundbothtoworkquitewell.Oncetherulesetandsettingareestablished,thestory,orcampaign,mustbecreated.ThisiswhereIrecommendD&D5eorCallofCthulhuovermanyotherrulesets.Whilesomemayfinditveryenjoyabletocreatetheirownworldsandstories,manymayfinditdifficultandtime-consuming.ThemorepopularpublishedTTRPGhaveprewrittenmodulesthatcanbepurchasedandarewritteninawayforGMstoeasilyfollow.Afterchoosingthemethod,ruleset,andstory,itissimplyamatterofplanningsessionswithinthecourseplan.Agood,smallsessionforanEFLclassshouldrunfrom45minutestoanhour.Longersessionsare,ofcourse,possibleasthetypicalplayingsessionformanywhenplayingTTRPGsforleisurecanrunanywherefrom1-4hours.4.2UsingTTRPGsforLanguageLearningAmajorroadblocktoimplementingRPorTTRPGsintheclassroomisalackofknowledgeonhowtoutilizethemforlanguagelearning.Whilelanguageuseandpracticehappensnaturallyduringthecourseofagame,itcanbeabitdauntingforinstructorstodeveloplanguagelearningactivitiesthatcanaccommodatethedynamicchangesthatcanhappenduringaTTRPGcampaign.Thisisbecausethestudentplayershavealotofcontroloverthedirectionofthestoryandthelanguagepointsthatwillbeneeded.However,therearemanyopportunitiesforlanguagelearningnomatterwhatthestudentsdo.ItisimportanttohavelessonsthatfocusonmoredirectlanguagelearningwhenusingTTRPGsinthecourse.Theentirecourseshouldnotsimplybelanguagepracticethroughrole-playing.TimeshouldbebalancedbetweenlanguagelearninglessonsandRP.Thisbalanceshouldbeadjustedaccordingtotheneedsofthestudentsintheclass.Ingeneral,lower-aptitudeclasseswillrequiremoredirectlanguageinstructionandlessRP.Thus,theoverallplotfortheTTRPGshouldbeshortandsimple.Ontheotherhand,moreadvancedstudentswilllikelyrequirelessinstructionandcanhandlemorecomplexplotsandlongerRPsessions.Also,itisimportanttothinkaboutthetypeoflanguageyouwishtoteachbeforebeginningtheTTRPG.IfyouwishtoteachstudentsbusinessEnglish,itisbettertohaveastorysettingthatrevolvesaroundtrade,business,andsales.Afantasyorsciencefictionsettingwouldlikelybelessuseful.ForgeneralEnglishclasses,thereisalotofflexibilityinthetypesofstoriesthatcanbeused.Knowwhatthestoryrequiresofthestudentsandplanlanguagelessonsaroundtheskillsthatwilllikelybenecessary.Moreover,instructorsshouldbeobservantofstudentsandstayalertforlearningopportunities.Itissometimesimportanttointerrupttherole-playingforateachingmoment.Forexample,duringarole-playingsessioninalisteningandspeakingEnglishcoursetaughtinthefallof2019,studentplayersfoundthemselvesinasituationwheretheyweregoingtobeinterrogatedbyagovernor.Beforetheinterrogation,theinstructorstoppedtheRPsessionandhadstudentshaveadiscussionaboutwhatquestionstheybelievedwouldbeaskedandhowtheyshouldrespond.Ashortlessonwasplannedforthenextclassonformallanguageandreporting.TherearealsolanguagelearningopportunitiesthatarenearlyalwaysrelevantorusefulwhenplayingTTRPGs.BeforeanyTTRPGstorybegins,studentsoftenmustmakecharacters.Inordertodoso,studentswillneedtousedescriptionsofappearanceandpersonality.Theymayalsoneedtolearnaboutmotivationsandgoals.ThisisalsoagreatopportunitytodiscussnarrativelanguagebyJournalofChubuUniversityEducationNo.20(2020)―48―
