Quizlethasmultiplewaysforstudentstostudythevocabularyandtheydovaryslightlybetweentheappforsmartphones,andthroughawebbrowseronacomputer.The“learn”activityhaslearnersmatchthedefinitiontothecorrectterm.Flashcards”issimplyaflashcardwiththewordononesideanditsdefinitionontheother.“Write”presentsthestudentwiththedefinitionandtheymusttypeinthecorrectword.“Gravity”issimilarto“write”inthatthedefinitionisonarockfallingandthelearnermusttypethecorrecttermbeforetherockreachestheground（figure2）.“Match”isagametoseehowfastthelearnercanmatchthetermswiththedefinition.Thereisalsoa“test”functioninwhichstudentscandesigntheirowntestandtestthemselvesoverthevocabulary.QuizletisnotnewtoIE.Wehaveuseditinthepast.Generally,studentsareexpectedtostudythewordsontheirown,butthereisagamewithinQuizletcalled“live”inwhichstudentsareputintogroupsandmustworktogetherusingtheirsmartphonestomatchthetermswiththeirdefinitions.Thiswasnotafeaturewewereabletousewithonlinelearningasstudentsneedtobeincloseproximitytooneanother.3.3IntroductiontoeachreadingTheimportanceofactivatingstudents'schematahasbeenwelldocumented（Coady;1979,Carrell,1984）.InthecaseofIE,onelessonisdedicatedtogettingthestudentstothinkaboutthetopic.Thisisdonewithavideothattheycanwatchonline.Oftentimes,thevideosarefoundonYouTube,andsometimestheyareproducedbytheteachers.3.4ReadingpassagesMostofthereadingpassagescamefromthetextbookusedintheclasswiththeexceptionofthepassageaboutThanksgivingforIEA.ThiswaswrittenbytheteachersanduploadedtoGoogleClassroomintheformofaPDF.Beforestudentsreadapassage,theymayhavesomepre-readingquestionstheyneedtocomplete.Aftertheyhaveread,therearecomprehensionquestionstobecompleted.Again,theseweredonethroughGoogleFormswithinGoogleClassroom.3.5TestingStudentsweretestedoverboththevocabulary（beforereading）andthereadingpassages（afterreading）.Thesetestsweretimed,butmonitoredbytheteachers.Ifastudenthadsomesortoftechnicalproblem,orsimplyforgot,wewouldreopenthetestforthatstudentandletthemcompletethetest.OneimportantdiscoverymadebeforeweJournalofChubuUniversityEducationNo.20（2020）―40―Figure2“Gravity”gameonQuizletFigure3Questionsoveranintroductionvideo
