containedthedirectionsfortheclass.Deadlineswerealsosetforassignments.Forassignments,studentshadmorethan24hourstocompleteeachtask.Inthecaseoftests,therewasasetstartingandendingtime.Thissectionwillgiveadetailedexplanationofhowthematerialwaspresentedtothestudents.3.1ExtensivereadingBamfordandRay(1997)describeextensivereadingas“readinglargeamountswiththeaimofgettinganoverallunderstandingofthematerial.Readersaremoreconcernedwiththemeaningofthetextthanthemeaningofindividualwordsorsentences”(para.3).Inthepast,studentswouldborrowbooksfromtheschoollibraryorfromthegradedreaderlibraryinourMulti-MediaRoom(MMR)andthentaketestsonMReader,awebsitehousingteststhatchecktoseeifstudentshaveactuallyreadthebook.Ifstudentsarereadingatorbelowtheirlevel,theyshouldbeabletoanswerthequestionseasily.Butwithstudentsbeingoffcampus,weneededtofindasolutiontokeepstudentsengagedinreadingsincetheycouldnotborrowbooksfromtheuniversity.ItshouldbenotedthatthisextensivereadingprogramisamajorpartofourcurriculumandnotonlyapartofIE,butalsoacomponentofourEnglishforAcademicPurposes(EAP)andCommunicativeGrammar(CG)classes.ForIE,first-yearstudentshaveagoalofreadingandpassingthetestsfor50,000words.Inthepast,somestudentswouldwaituntilthedeadlineapproachedandreadwhattheywereassignedjustpriortothedeadline.Inanefforttokeepstudentsreadingconstantly,amidtermgoalwasputinplacetoencouragestudentstoreadthroughoutthesemester.Unfortunately,therewerestillstudentswhowouldnotdothisandonlyreadtwotimesduringthesemester-beforethemidtermandendofsemestergoals.Tosupportthis,EAPimplementedweeklygoalsforstudents.Inthefallsemester,first-yearstudentshaveamidtermgoalof37,500words,andanendofsemestergoalof75,000words.Second-yearstudentshaveamidtermgoalof50,000words,andasemestergoalof100,000wordsinboththespringandfallsemesters.Ifstudentsfailtoreachthemidtermgoal,theirfinalgradeinIEandCGisloweredby10percent.Iftheydonotmeettheendofsemestergoal,theirgradeinIE,CG,andEAPisloweredby25percent.Thatistosay,ifastudentfinishedthesemesterwithagradeof75%butdidnotmeetthesemestergoalforreading,theirgradewouldbeloweredto50%,andtheywouldconsequentlyfailtheclass.Tomaintainourextensivereadingprogram,wechangedfromusingtheMReaderplatformtoXReading,aplatforminwhichstudentscouldaccessgradedreadersdigitally-bothontheirsmartphonesandontheircomputers.AspecialgrantfromChubuUniversitywasusedtopayforaccesstoXReading.Thesamegoalsusedinthepastwerealsousedforonlinelearning.3.2VocabularystudyBeforestudentsreadapassage,theyareinstructedtostudyvocabulary.Thevocabularychosenforstudentstostudyhasbeenselectedbytheteachers.StudentsuseafreewebsitecalledQuizlettostudythevocabulary.Thiscanbeaccessedusinganappontheirsmartphonesorontheircomputers.Oncestudentsjointheclass,theyareabletostudyallofthevocabularyfromthesemester.Figure1showsthevocabularylistsforIEC.ThestudentsarenotgivendefinitionsinJapanese.StudentsareencouragedtouseasmuchEnglishaspossibleandnotrelyontranslatingeverythingintoJapanese.AProposalforUsingGoogleClassroomtoImplementaContent-BasedIntegratedEnglishCourse―39―Figure1VocabularysetsonQuizlet
