practiceacademicEnglishspeakingandlisteningskillssuchasparticipatingindiscussions,takingnotes,andtalkingaboutresearch.ListeningandspeakingclassesareheldonMondaysandThursdaysatthe9-10blockandcoursesareofferedfromlevel1to5.Thesecoursesarerecommendedforstudentsthatwishtodeveloptheircommunicativeabilities,bothforacademicandnon-academicpurposes.SincethelowerlevelsfocusmoreonreinforcingbasiccommunicativeskillsinEnglish,theyhelpstudentsfeelmoreconfidenttousetheirEnglishwheneveranopportunitypresentsitself.ThefirstlevelofAcademicListeningandSpeakingiscalled"IntrotoPASEO."ThisclassisagoodclassforbeginningEFLlearnersasithelpseasethemintoacommunicativestyleclassroom,whichmaybedifferentfromwhattheyareusedto.Overall,theAcademicListeningandSpeakingclassesarelikelythebestchoiceforstudentsthatarenotyetcomfortablewiththeirEnglish.Advancedlevelstudentsalsoenjoytheseclasses,astheupperlevelschallengethestudentstouseEnglishtopresent,debate,andnegotiate.3.2AcademicReadingandWritingAcademicReadingandWritingcoursesimprovestudents'Englishreadingandwritingabilitiesbypracticingreading,grammar,comprehension,vocabulary,andwriting.BeginninglevelstudentsbeginusingacademicreadingmethodsforunderstandingtextsandimprovetheirwritingwitheasywritingassignmentstobuildcomfortinusingEnglishtowriteideas.Advancedstudentsimprovetheirreadingandwritingskillswithadvancedacademicreadingtasksandwritingmanytypesoflongerreports.TheseclassesmeetonTuesdaysandFridaysatthe9-10blockandareofferedatlevels2-5.TheAcademicReadingandWritingclassesaregoodforstudentsthatintendtogointoafieldwheretheywillberequiredtoreadandwriteinEnglish.Ingeneral,moststudentswillbenefitfromlearningacademicwrittenlanguage.Thesecoursesalsooftenincludewritingusefulforbusinesssettingsaswell.3.3PASEOContentCoursesTherearecurrently15contentcoursesavailablethroughouttheweek.ContentcoursescoverawidevarietyoftopicsandEnglishskills.TheprimarygoalofcontentcoursesistohavestudentsuseEnglishtostudy,learn,ordosomething.Unliketheacademiccourses,contentcoursesareheldonlyonceperweek.TheyarelistedbelowwithshortdescriptionsandadviceinchronologicalorderfromMondaytoFriday.3.3.1PronunciationWorkshopPronunciationWorkshopisheldeveryMondayatthe5-6blockandisdesignedforstudentsatPASEOlevels1to3.ThecourseprovidesstudentswithdetailedknowledgeaboutEnglishphonicsandprosody.ThiscourseisrecommendedforstudentswhohavedifficultylisteningtoEnglish.ManylowerlevelJapaneselearnersofEnglishstrugglewiththeirlisteningduetoalackoffamiliaritywiththesoundofEnglish.In-depthknowledgeofhowthesesoundsareproducedcanhelpstudentsunderstandhowtolistentoEnglish.Thiscourseisalsogoodforbuildingspeakingconfidence.Somestudentsarenervousorembarrassedabouttheirpronunciationandthisoftenpreventsthemfromusingitopenly.3.3.2CurrentIssuesCurrentIssuesisheldeveryMondayatthe5-6blockandisdesignedforstudentsatPASEOlevels3to5.Thiscourseusesauthenticarticles,recordings,andvideostointroduceavarietyofinteresting,currenttopics,andgivesstudentsthebackground,skillsandpracticetheyneedtohavemeaningfuldiscussionsaboutcurrentworldissues.Inthecourse,studentshavelong-formdiscussionsaboutveryseriousissuesfacingtheworld,suchashunger,immigration,andclimatechange.Itisveryusefulforhigherlevelstudentslookingtoimprovetheirlisteningandspeakingskills.3.3.3AdvancedGrammarAdvancedGrammarisheldeveryTuesdayatthe9-10blockandisdesignedforstudentsatPASEOlevels3to5.Thiscourseisdesignedtoimprovestudentswritingandspeakingbyteachingwhen―36―JournalofChubuUniversityEducationNo.18（2018）
