studentsandoneforhigherproficiencystudents.Inthisway,itishopedthatthemaximumnumberofstudentsandfacultycanfindtimetostudyEnglishwiththePASEOprogramandpracticetheirEnglish.Finally,recentcourseshavebeendevelopedinordertocatertotheneedsofChubustudents.Forexample,aPASEOScienceclasswasaddedonMondayafternoon.ThetopicandtimewaschoseninordertohelpstudentsinthescienceswithEnglishusefulintheirfield.Also,anewvocabularycoursehasalsobeendevelopedtoaddresstheneedsofhigherproficiencystudentswhohaveagoodgraspofgrammaticalstructure,butoftenlackenoughvocabularytoeffectivelycommunicatetheirideasinEnglish.Moreinformationonthesecoursesandotherswilldiscussedlaterinthispaper.2PASEOTeachingPhilosophyPASEOistaughtby5nativeEnglishspeakingTESOLprofessionals.Assuch,thereisnoprescribedteachingstyleorphilosophy.Thatsaid,PASEOcurriculumisdeeplyrootedincommunicativeEnglishinstructionandmostinstructorsplaceheavyemphasisontreatingEnglishasaskillratherthanafieldofstudy.Thus,PASEOclassesaretypicallydynamicandrequirestudentstobeactiveparticipantsinacquiringtheirEnglishskills.Assuch,PASEOcoursesarelimitedto25students.ThisgiveseachstudentampleopportunitytouseEnglishinclass.Furthermore,PASEOclassesaretaughtexclusivelyinEnglish,soastohelpimmersestudentsintheEnglishlanguageduringclasstimeandmaximizeboththeirpracticeandexposuretothelanguage.PASEOalsoplacesheavyemphasisonauthenticity.ClassesaredesignedtoteachEnglishthatisusefulbothinsideandoutsideoftheclassroom.Instructorsusecomprehensible,butnaturallanguagethatlearnersarelikelyencounterindealingwithotherEnglishspeakersinavarietyofsocialsituations.Westrivetoteachthelanguageasitiscurrentlyused.ThePASEOmissionandcurriculumalsobothstresstheimportanceofbuildingmotivationandautonomyinstudentssothattheyareempoweredtocontinuetheirEnglishstudiesevenafterleavingChubuUniversity.InstructorsinPASEOarealsoencouragedtodevelopnewcoursesdesignedtobetteraddressEnglishlanguageneedsatChubuUniversityaswellastoexplorenewmethodsofEnglishlanguageinstruction.Inthisway,PASEOhopestocontinuallyimproveandevolveaseachinstructorbringstheirownuniquemethods,styles,andphilosophiesintotheprogram.Finally,PASEOinstructorsareencouragedtospendtimetalkingwithstudentsoutsideofclassandbuildingarapportwiththem.Thisistogivestudentsanopportunitytousetheirlanguageinnaturalsettingsaswellasbuildtheirconfidenceandtrust.Assuch,thereareseveraleventsthathappenthroughouttheyearinPASEO,includinganovernighttriptotheChubuUniversityEnaLodgeforanEnglish-onlycampinthefall,andabowlingpartyinthesummer.ThegoalistoprovidestudentswithasmanyopportunitiesaspossibletopracticetheirEnglish.InternationalstudentsarealsotypicallyinvitedtotheseeventstohelpstudentspracticeusingEnglishandtohelpbuildinternationalrelationships.Theprogramintendstoexpandthenumberoftheseeventsinthefuture.3CurrentCourseOfferingsPASEOcurrentlyoffers24differentEnglishcourseswithavarietyofdifferentfoci.Thiscanbedifficultforstudentstodecidewhichcourseisbestfortheirneeds.Furthermore,itcanmakeitdifficultforfacultyandadvisorstorecommendPASEOcourseswithoutpriorknowledgeofthecoursesandtheireducationalgoals.ThissectionaimstoaddressthoseissuesbyprovidingthecoursedescriptionsofthecurrentPASEOcourseofferingsandthengivingadviceandsuggestionastowhatstudentsmaymostbenefitfromeachcourse.3.1AcademicListeningandSpeakingAcademicListeningandSpeakingcoursesimprovestudents'listeningskillsanddeveloptheirabilitytocommunicateinEnglishthroughspeaking.BeginninglevelstudentslistentorealEnglishandpracticethevocabulary,grammar,andcommonexpressionsneededforcommondailycommunication.Advancedstudentslearnand―35―20YearsofPASEOatChubuUniversity:ADescriptionandSummaryofChanges
