1HistoryofPASEOThePreparationforAcademicStudyofEnglishOverseas（PASEO）programstartedasanoutgrowthoftheOhioProgramforEnglishLanguageTeaching（OPELT）.OPELTbeganin1990asacollaborationbetweenOhioUniversity'sOhioProgramforIntensiveEnglish（OPIE）andChubuUniversity.TheOPELTprogramwasoriginallydesignedtoprovideChubuUniversitywithhighlyqualifiedEnglishlanguageinstructorsforgeneralEnglishcourses.Intheagreement,theOPELTinstructorswereemployedbyOhioUniversitytoworkatChubuUniversityasEnglishasaForeignLanguage（EFL）instructors.In1998,theOPELTmissionexpandedtoincludepreparingChubustudentstostudyinEnglishoverseasthroughthePASEOprogram.1.1PASEOEarlyHistoryThePASEOprogramstartedwithamajorfocusonacademicEnglishskillsmostlyaimedatpreparingstudentstostudyabroad.Originally,thePASEOprogramhadthreemaingoals:1）pre-academiclanguageinstruction,2）thepromotionof―33―＊1SeniorAssistantProfessor,GlobalEducationCenter,LanguageProgram（EnglishⅡ）＊2Professor,GlobalEducationCenter,LanguageProgram（EnglishⅡ）20YearsofPASEOatChubuUniversity:ADescriptionandSummaryofChangesALLENDavidP.＊1andOGURISeiko＊2AbstractChubuUniversityishometoauniqueEnglishlearningprogram,establishedin1997,thatisnotfoundinmostotherinstitutionsinJapan:theProgramforAcademicStudyinEnglishOverseas（PASEO）.Inrecentyears,therehavebeenmanychangesatChubuUniversity,andPASEOisnodifferent.ThispaperwilldiscussthecurrentstatusofoneofChubuUniversity'slargestEnglishlanguageprograms.Thepurposeofthisreportistoprovidefacultywithageneralunderstandingandawarenessoftheorganization,implementation,andgoalsofthePASEOprogram.Morespecifically,thispaperwillbrieflyexplainthePASEOteachingphilosophyandcurriculum.Furthermore,itwilldiscusshowPASEOhasexpandedandadaptedtobettersuitstudentdemandsandneeds.Inaddition,thisreportwillprovidedetaileddescriptionsofthecoursesandresourcesthatbothstudentsandfacultycanutilizehereatChubuUniversity.Finally,suggestionswillbemadeforhowPASEOcoursescanbebestutilizedbystudents,staff,andfaculty.TheoverallgoalofthisstudyistonotonlyspreadgeneralawarenesstothefacultyofthePASEOprogram,butalsoserveasaspringboardfordiscussionsaboutthefutureofEnglisheducationatChubuUniversityasawhole.KeywordsEnglishlanguagelearning,education,curriculumdesign,PASEO
