―75―JournalofChubuUniversityEducationNo.17(2017)GuidingStudentsintotheWorldofShakespeare:ReadingRomeoandJulietandTheTempestSHIMAZUNobuko**Professor,DepartmentofEnglishLanguageandCulture,CollegeofHumanities,ChubuUniversityAbstractThisisareportonhowIteachacourseentitledEnglishLiteraturewhichaimstoguidenon-literaturemajorsintotheworldofShakespeare.AmongthemanyplaysofShakespeare,thecoursedealswithRomeoandJulietandTheTempest.ThispaperintroducesvariousclassactivitiesinordertohelpstudentstounderstandShakespeareanplaysbetterwithoutlosingtheirinterestandconcentration.Thefilmversionsofthetwoplaysarealsousedinthiscourse.IntreatingTheTempest,thecomparisonbetweentheplayandthefilmisindispensabletoshowingthestudentshowtointerpretthethemeoftheplay.Indoingso,Iurgethemtounderstandthatdifferentwaysofinterpretingthetextexist,includingstudyingitfromasocialandpoliticalpointofview.Byactiveengagementofthereaderaccordingtohisorherviewpoint,Ialsopointouttothestudentshowagenuineappreciationofaliteraryworkbecomespossible.KeywordsteachingEnglishliterature,introductiontoShakespeare,RomeoandJuliet,TheTempest,interpretingthetheme
