Although Nepalese handicraft in-dustry has had ups and downs in ex-port in previous years; its export is in-creasing at the present time. Proper promotion in international trade fairs, appreciation of dollar against rupee etc. were some favorable factors for this increase in exports, but it is not predictable that it continues in the same way from now on. Therefore, for continuous increase in export, aggressive attendance in inter-national trade fairs, doing surveys of markets, customers and current trends of domestic and international markets, the use of the internet for promotion, marketing and selling its products are vital. Also acceptance of foreign investment and joint ventures can help improve its capital capacity, market share and technology. Nepal is located as a landlocked country between two big nations, India and China. It is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and the country of the highest peak of the world, Mount Everest. Be-sides that, Nepal is also a country of various ethnic groups who live togeth-er happily and cooperatively, enjoying their own cultures and traditions. From those cultures and traditions unique handicrafts and arts were born. Almost 125 ethnic group who live in Nepal have their own culture and tradi-tions and different cultural dresses, ornaments and utensils used in vari-ous festivals and cultural events. Those dresses, ornaments and uten-sils usually reflect their tradition and culture which are made since a long time ago using unique designs, mate-rials and techniques of that time. We call this kind of industry handicraft. History of handicraft in Nepal start-ed in the 4th century when woolen blankets were made from the wool of sheep that became famous for their good quality. From that period on vari-ous handicrafts have been introduced and promoted as a form of small scale and cottage industries. At the present time, this industry has become a major exporting industry in the country, which exports its products to more than 80 countries, earning huge for-eign exchange helping national eco-nomic growth. It also employs around 1 million of the population of the coun-try. Within 30 years of aggressive ex-port to the foreign markets, it experi-enced many ups and downs, but still manages to remain the leading export industry. But it suffers many problems, including production, exporting and marketing processes. Most of the problems are manage-able through proper management, gov-ernance and the help and guidance of the government. Implementation of proper rules and policies, proper gover-nance of government officers, and fi-nancial help and guidance by govern-ment can help to overcome its many problems. But problems like marketing process or marketing strategies need research, knowledge and time to im-prove. Proper research and surveys of markets and customers are vital to understand current trends, needs and wants of customers in this globalizing world. Proper promotion and marketing
